Making Of

The Story Behind A Través del Iris

What it took to turn personal memories into something universal, in VR.

The Story Behind A Través del Iris

An idea long in the making

I'd had this story in mind for two years before I ever started building it. Putting my own experiences, the beautiful ones and the not-so-beautiful ones, into something I could make felt like an act of love toward myself. I've been through plenty of ups and downs, and revisiting them usually just leaves me sitting in melancholy.

Right when I felt ready to turn that into something with games, I was moving apartments, and that move is where the premise actually came from.

Personal, but universal

The hard part was making an experience that felt personal to me but still universal enough for people to understand what I was trying to say: how you can get lost in your own thoughts, and how everyone's process is non-linear, nobody moves through things in a straight line. I'm proud that people connect with these stories without me having to filter them first.

From there I started shaping the different ways to experience it: what someone would feel moving through it, and how those feelings should build.

Being brave about it

I feel brave about what I've lived through. I still have good days and bad days, and that's just my process. I think everyone should feel proud of going through theirs too, whatever that looks like.

One more thank you

This post also owes a thank you to my program. Seeing the range of things people build there, VR, games, installations, all of it, is part of what pushed me to make something as ambitious as this.
